My Best Advice on stop Smoking

Image
If you want to stop smoking here’s the best advice that I could give you.  The first thing I would say is, smoking is actually not physically addictive for very long after you stop smoking.  So we know from studies that about 100 hours after your last cigarette, all of the nicotine is out of your bloodstream.  And once all the nicotine is out of your bloodstream you’re no longer physically addicted to cigarettes. Now that being said, you might be behaviorally addicted.  You might have these habits that have grown up around smoking.  So when someone who, two years after they gave up cigarettes, has a cup of coffee in the morning and has this urge to smoke with their cup of coffee, that’s not a physical addiction, that’s a habitual urge that’s reemerging and is making itself know.  So if you want to stop smoking, if we recognize that all you have to do is make it through the first 100 hours and you’ll not be physically addicted to nicotine anymore, what...

JELLYFISH LAKE

Palau is a special place. Thousands of years ago these jellyfish became trapped in a natural basin on the island when the ocean receded. Over time they evolved into a new species that lost most of their stinging ability.

HD nature videos

This video is a collaboration between Sheldon Neill and Colin Delehanty. All time lapses were shot on the Canon. Our hearts go out to the families of Markus Praxmarer who lost his life while climbing Half Dome on September 19th, 2011 and Ranger Ryan Hiller, who was crushed by a tree January 22nd 2012. They will be missed. (A photo of Ranger Ryan Hiller can be found to the right, above the statistics counter)anon 5D Mark II with a variety of Canon L and Zeiss, C.P .2 Lenses. These videos are getting better and better. This may be the best timelapse I've seen to date. AWESOME! Technically very well done! And epic sceneries and landscapes! Really beautiful work! Hard to follow this! Yes the Dynamic Perception gear is fantastic, as shown here.

Why i was care about celebrities

Image
Many readers have often asked me why I care about celebrities and  Bieber’s latest activity  is a good illustration. Justin Bieber, the incredibly popular and famous teen pop idol, wrote in the guestbook at the Anne Frank House that he hoped the teenage Holocaust victim would be "a bieber" (the term for his fans). My problem here is how we devote attention given our scarce resources, like time and energy. That so much of our media is giving Bieber’s Anne Frank comment attention is an indication, to me, that something is wrong. His comment obviously demonstrates an enormous ego – which, to be fair, most of us would probably have if we were that young, rich, famous and loved. Again, he’s not special in this way: he’s an ordinary person with a platform and a million eyes observing him, with two million fingers poking and prodding every piece of evidence of his existence. Yes, he has an “army” of bizarre – if not  apparently insane  – defenders, but I don’t t...

Healthy pets healthy people

Image
After noticing that encouraging pet owners to take better physical care of their pets resulted in healthier pet owners, a working group of veterinarians wants to develop strategies to improve the health of humans through their domesticated animals. Called  Healthy Pets, Healthy Family , the group  has "conducted surveys of vets and pet owners and identified the areas where human and animal health overlap." Its goals now include reducing the number of pet owners who smoke and increasing the proportion of dog owners who go on daily walks. The group also wants to promote smoke-free pet parks. What the veterinarians have observed is that people are more willing to put effort into improving the health of their pets than they are at staying fit themselves. "The idea is simple: If people won't exercise, eat better and stop smoking for themselves, maybe they will for their pets. 'You look at pets, and they look like their owners,' said Karen Ehnert, acting di...

If music be the stuff of brain, play the music

Image
Ludwig van Beethoven is credited with saying, "Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy." And while some may argue the point, there's certainly been a good bit of evidence suggesting that learning to read and play music is good for intelligence, academic performance and critical thinking skills.  In a 2006 study published in the  Journal of Educational Psychology , E. Glenn Schellenberg, a researcher at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, found that  6-year-olds given voice and piano lessons had higher IQs as well as better academic performance.  What's more, Schellenberg found that the effect got bigger the longer that the children received the lessons--there was a dose-response association .  There have been several hypotheses why music may have such an effect.  It may be a chicken-and-egg-thing where children with higher IQs can handle the rigors and challenges of music on top of school and other activities.  It m...

Marriage is good for health

Image
You've heard it time and time again:  marriage is good for your health.  Studies have shown that married folks not only live longer but also enjoy better health than their singleton peers.  Married couples have a lower risk of strokes, cancer and heart attacks.  Married folks are less depressed and anxious--not only that, but marrieds often show increased overall happiness.  The particular reasons behind these marriage benefits are somewhat debatable.  But the general consensus is that marriage offers you a healthier, less-stressful lifestyle, better financial security, and a partner to help you weather life's storms (and, perhaps, to nag you to take better care of yourself).  But do these benefits extend to all married couples?   New research from the Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Austin suggests maybe not .  The researchers used data from nearly 800,000 people who participated in the National He...

Trouble sleeping ? Go camping for a few days

Image
University of Colorado-Boulder's Kenneth Wright and colleagues studied eight subjects as they spent a week living their lives under normal that is to say, largely artificial lighting conditions. They then sent the subjects out camping in the Rocky Mountains for a week, where their primary source of light was the sun. Tests showed that after that week, all of the subjects' internal clocks reset themselves to match the sun's schedule. This included early birds, night owls, and those in between. Details of the study were recently published in  Current Biology . See the below video and relax some time  It's a common fact that modern life, particularly in brightly-lit cities with lots of different screens drawing our attention, can negatively affect sleep. Because our internal clocks are largely set to electrical lighting patterns, melatonin levels tend to be higher in the mornings, which explains why it's harder for many people to fully wake up. Ironi...

world's top one painting

Mona lisa The  Mona Lisa  ( La Gioconda  or  La Joconde ) is a half-length portrait of a woman by the  Italian  artist  Leonardo da Vinci , which has been acclaimed as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world. The painting, thought to be a portrait of  Lisa Gherardini , the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, is in oil on a  poplar   panel , and is believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506, although Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. It was acquired by King  Francis I of France  and is now the property of the  French Republic , on permanent display at the  Musée du Louvre in  Paris  since 1797. The ambiguity of the subject's expression, which is frequently described as enigmatic, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modeling of forms and the atmospheric illusionism w...
